Show HN: Umbel – Remote-control agent CLIs over tmux

Been using this in all my sessions the last months. Opus 5.5 (over MCP) spawns Deepseek flash agents - and codex for audits etc. Very curious to hear what the HN crowd thinks/makes of it. Comments URL: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50383189 Points: 1 # Comments: 0

Faster Retrieval for Better, More Efficient RAG

Maximum inner product search (MIPS) sits at the core of recommendation systems, search, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). Given a query vector, MIPS systems search within a database of millions of candidate key vectors for the one that best matches the query. The original data point associated with that best-matching key is then used to handle the query: in RAG, the document that is best suited to answer the question is typically prefixed to the query. As the number of keys grows to millions and vector dimensions reach thousands, the computational cost of running an exhaustive…

Rewrite, Then Veto: Rewriter-Agnostic Edit Gating for LLM-Based Post-OCR Correction

arXiv:2611.05539v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: LLMs can repair noisy OCR transcripts of historical documents, but they also change text that was already correct. We propose EditVeto, a veto gate placed after a full-context LLM rewrite. The rewrite is character-aligned to the OCR input, its differences are split into blocks, and a 0.6B-parameter gate keeps or reverts each block. An oracle analysis motivates the design: given the true error locations, per-span generation is worse than no correction, whereas vetoing a full rewrite's edits helps. Trained on rewrites by two Qwen3 models and evaluated, frozen, on the eight HIPE-OCRepair-2026 test sets, the gate improves all five rewriters tested, two of them unseen in training: weighted cMER falls by 0.0026-0.0044 and the preference score rises by 0.15-0.25 (paired bootstrap, p ~ 0.0002 each). On published competition outputs it lowers cMER for three of four teams but raises it for the winning run (0.0050 to 0.0065). In a second, disclosed test look, a retrained gate still improves LoRA-tuned rewriters (cMER -0.0011 to -0.0021), and an ensemble of their gated edits reaches a cMER of 0.0069 and a preference score of 0.928, mostly through fine-tuning and pooling rather than gating. Built only on public models and data, it is behind the winner (0.0050) and tied with the second-ranked run (0.0071), both from the only team using domain pre-training, and ahead of all other published runs. A third, secondary look shows the unchanged gate improving zero-shot Qwen3.8-27B (cMER 0.0114 to 0.0108) but only the preference score of its LoRA-tuned version.

Use decision models with Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Evaluations

Some agent-evaluation questions are narrow and repeatable, and decision models answer exactly that kind of question. This post shows how to connect two decision models, Jev and Strands Decider, to Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Evaluations through code-based evaluators, and how to validate a decision-model check before you gate a release on it.

Why Pay for Long Reasoning When Rewrite Do Trick? Causal Effects of Reasoning History Compaction on Future Generation and Agent Cost

arXiv:2611.03852v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Reasoning substantially improves language models' ability to solve difficult problems, but long reasoning traces make these gains expensive. Efficient reasoning should express useful analysis in fewer tokens by reducing repetition and text that adds little value to solving the problem. Progress in proprietary models motivates this goal, yet their hidden scratchpads limit direct study of how it is achieved. We investigate whether open-weight models can generate less verbose reasoning by changing the form of their own earlier thoughts, without retraining. Our intervention rewrites prior reasoning into compact state records before pending tool results are revealed, then compares continuations from original and compact histories. Across the tested models, accepted compact histories usually shorten future reasoning; a coding case study also shows less repeated verification after a shared candidate solution. In software-agent deployments, compaction can reduce total spending, although task quality and rewrite-inclusive time depend on the target and compressor. These findings identify reasoning history as one way to reduce future reasoning-token use and motivate model-specific compaction policies evaluated for both efficiency and retained capability.

DistOptimize: Automatic Optimization of Distributed Protocols

arXiv:2610.39017v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Distributed consensus and consistency protocols are difficult to reason about yet foundational to the cloud; as such, they often undergo a rigorous proof and formal verification process before deployment. The same level of rigor is rarely applied to protocol modifications, which occur frequently in production and threaten to compromise safety. In this paper, we eliminate the risk of safety violations from manual modifications by presenting an automatic optimizer for distributed protocols: DistOptimize. DistOptimize adapts throughput optimizations from academic languages to frameworks used in production, verifying the correctness of the rewrites in Rocq and automating their application through a combination of calibration and ILP-based search

ggml-cpu : rewrite concat as one row kernel for all types (#31179) Every dst row comes from src0 or src1, or for dim 0 from the row of src0 followed by the row of src1, so a single kernel covers every type: a dense source row is one memcpy, quantized types included, and a strided source is copied element by element with the element size known at compile time. Rows are split across threads instead of i2 alone, which is often 1, and are copied in tiles of 32: for a transposed source the elements are walked in the outer loop, so the rows of a tile read neighboring addresses instead of jumping a full row stride per element. Add transposed b cases to test_concat, the layout of the delta-net conv input, and a perf case for it. **Website:** - **Attestations:** - **macOS/iOS:** - [macOS Apple Sili

RSI-Opt: Recursive Self-Improvement Optimizer Agents For Model Training

arXiv:2610.32026v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Conventional neural-network training typically follows a predefined optimization recipe, motivating a LLM agent that monitors training dynamics and adjusts optimizer settings as training progresses, but a fixed agent policy does not accumulate experience across runs. We introduce RSI-Opt, a plug-and-play Recursive Self-Improvement Optimizer Agents which evolves the knowledge that guides this process: a prompt, a playbook of procedures, a library of tested optimizer code, and a decision cadence. A meta-agent rewrites this policy using evidence from earlier runs, and an archive retains evaluated policies for further evolution. Across 5 generations on three training tasks, the meta-agents develop reusable procedures and code and conduct their ow
